Layer C, Task 6 Flashcards
Function of the crop and gizzard in an earthworm
Crop: stores food
Gizzard: Grinds food to break into pieces
Digestive system
Made up of digestive tract and accessory organs
Parts of the digestive tract
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestine (small & large)
The digestive system has the ability to complete 4 major tasks:
- Ingestion
- Digestion
- Absorption
- Elimination
Mouth
Breaks down food
- Mechanically (with teeth & tongue)
- Chemically (saliva contains enzymes that break down the food molecules)
Esophagus
Muscular tube connecting mouth to stomach
Smooth muscle tissue contracts & relaxes (peristalsis) to move the food along
Stomach
Holds and churns food
- Chemical digestion (gastric juices, stomach lining has cells that produce enzymes & acids)
- Mechanical digestion (Smooth muscle tissue contracts to mix the stomach contents)
Chyme
Resulting substance after the churning of the substance
Sphincters
Separates stomach from esophagus and intestines
Small intestine
Where most digestion occurs
Goblet cells release mucus and nutrients diffuse through wall of small intestine
3 parts of the small intestine
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
Large intestine
Lining absorbs water from indigestible food
Remaining solid matter excreted as feces
Accessory organs
Help digest food by supplying enzymes
Liver, gallbladder, pancreas
Liver
Largest internal organ, produces bile (helps break down lipids)
Gallbladder
Stores the bile
