Large Intestine Flashcards
What is the cecum?
Blind diverticulum at the beginning of the colon
What are the 3 parts of the cecum?
Base, main body, apex
What leads into the large intestine?
Ileum
What 4 parts does the large intestine consist of?
Cecum, colon, rectum, anus
What are sacculation’s in a horse?
Bulging sac like structures caused by muscle contraction
What is the purpose of sacculation’s?
Prolongs the time contents stay in the large intestine increasing time for absorption and microbial digestion
Ingesta travels ____________ in the large intestine
Slowly
Ingesta must be thoroughly ___________ to allow for contact with absorptive surface
Mixed
What are the 4 different types of motility patterns in the large intestine?
Segmentation
Peristalsis
Antiperistalsis
Mass movement
What is segmentation?
Ingesta is moved in a slow back and forth movement, increasing contact between ingesta and epithelial surface
What is peristalsis?
Moves ingesta towards anus
What is antiperistalsis?
Occurs in the opposite direction - towards the stomach - slows the transit of ingesta allowing for more time for reabsorption
What is mass movement?
Intense propulsive movement, moving contents of large intestine towards the rectum
Slow waves in the large intestine are initiated by what?
Pacemaker cells
Depolarizing waves sent towards the stomach create what?
Antiperistaltic movements
