lanyon Flashcards

1
Q

if we knew all, we should be more glad to get away

A

lanyon has been a representitive of the conforming slightly backwards christian scientists who reject a new technological era for more relaxed experiments, jekyll is a promethian character who foils lanyon in his need to go further than man has before, he defies the biblical belief that only jesus can perform changed of shape and only for the upmost moral
perhaps stevenson is warning against extreme sceintific advancements, promethesus explores too far and tests the gods and is met with eternal hel, hyde and jekyll draw constant connotations to hell
christian scientsis do not believe we should discover more than science wills us to

Q

unscientific balderdash, wouldve estranged damon and pythias

A

jekyll is a foil to the christian anti evolutionary and that scientists, possibly showing how he did not conform already to some standards due to his id
this however is more so used for irony as lanyon and the christians, represenitive of those who feared an era of discovery and change, brutally mock his experiments that are proved to be successful
damon and pythias is a greek allusion to mythical best friends

Q

i was bound to do as he requested

A

despire imminent differences that cause a heavy rift in their friendship, te idea of being a conformist genleman and having a good rapport amongst your peers through loyalty was more important than differences so they are very loyal to one another

Q

initial description of lanyon vs post tranformation

A

he is red and hearty- clearly very large and full of life and flmaboyant
when utterson sees him for the last time hes described as very pale which is a stark juxaposiiton showing the horors of overknowlege- this also plays into the colour imagery weve seen throughout of hydes raw evil presence being black such as in ‘black sneering coolness’ whilst other characters morality is excenuated

Q

“I must die ; and yet I shall die incredulous.”

A

lanyon is so moritifed by what he saw, soemthing that man simply cannot and isnt supposed to comprehend that he is unwilling to
he knows that he has been pushed too far and yet he wants to die not acceptinng the truth as it is too intense and too starkly against his morals
lanyons death is symbolic of the dangers of extreme advancements
