Context Flashcards
Ozimandias context
came from readings of ramanses II- ozimandias was a nickname for him- he standsa s a metaphor for miopic rulers past and present, the temple of ramses bore the king of kings inscription and is used to imply that the power of tyrannical rulers is fleeting and will be eroded over time
-he resembles george 111 and people in shelleys era, shelley a romantic was v anti rulers. Rameses was knwon to be a violent and tyrannical ruler just like George
- Shelley was a romantic poet who as a key figure in the enlightenment era wanted to focus on the rejection of institutions of power and the awe of time
Exposure context
- owen was a soldier killed a week before armistice in 1918 and wrote exposure suffering from shell shock in history- therefore his work is a personal account of the First World War and an output of his internalised feelings
- it rejected British ideas of nationalism and the romanticism of war that had made it more of a chivalrous honour with a mythical status than a brutal reality
Context in SOTI
- heany is an Irish poet who lived in a farming community
- he wrote this poem in a segment of the collection ‘death of a naturalist’ which focussed on the Aran islands and natures powers in that island
- it demonstrates a non romanticised view of nature that looks to physically expose nature as a transcendant power iver all of humanity that cannot be withheld
Prelude context
- Wordsworth was a troubled child who was deeply affectionate towards his childhood area of the Lake District as it gave him a sense of beauty and relaxation
-he became a leading voice in the enlightenment eras opposition as romantic poetry that looked to remind people of the transcendant power of nature in a changing society that was beginning to shift towards an industrial lifestyle
MLD context
- browning was an Italian living poet whom visited Italy promtly before writing the poem
- though set in a vauge and vacant other land, the politics is a very present criticism of modern society hidden under the facade of a fictional duke, makes his message protected from repercussions and almost makes him more realistic as it seems as if his story is repeating itself in real life
- Duke of ferrera- browning was obsessed with and his first wife had died in suspicious circumstances
- critics es the inequality of women in Victorian society- they had little autonomy which is shown through the little rights his wife had and the fact he deems her inferior, there is also an inately Victorian focus on manners and modesty such as the taboo nature of sex and the fact the dutchess needed the dukes status to be successful
COTLD context
- Tennyson was the Victorian poet laureate whom was bound to glorify britan and romanticise war to shield the government from backlash
- set in the Crimean war, very unpopular with the British public who did not see a purpose of their involvement, the death of 600 members of the light brigade was a clear mistake and a suicide mission that needed to be painted as a nationalistic martyrdom rather than a dire blunder. This was the most doccumted war at the time ever as it was in the end of the 19th century so criticism and understanding of war was immense
Bayonet chsrge context
- Hughes grew up in a home impacted by the effects of ww1 as his family members were all veterans, his father one of the few in his group to survive the campaign.
- Hughes wanted to pay homage to the brutality of trench warfare and the lasting effects ptsd had on veterans as a cautionary tale to future generations and as criticism to a government who put little effort into reimbursing or supporting those who survived warfare
Kamikaze context
- in ww2 kamikaze pilots flew Japanese planes filled with explosives into military targets, they were told that it would cause such an impact it would change japans course of losing the war.
- at first those recruited were trained pilots but by the end all were enlisted and publicaly shamed if they did not wish to embark on the suicide mission
- kamikaze is named after the typhoon that wiped out enemy ships in Japan which is very patriotic and implies that japan is protected by the gods, therefore they feel these pilots are a god send and will be historically matyred.
- kamikaze later meant something dumbfounded and idiotic in western culture
War photographer context
- Duffy was friends with war photographers and wanted to show how war impacted all involved whilst also criticise the lack of stigmatismes towards war that has made people desensitised to it
- refers to the napalm girl photo which largely impacted the public’s perception of the USA in the Vietnam war, this contrasts the now passive attitude the public has towards war photograohy
Remains context
- armitige based this collection on the channel four documentary ‘the not dead’ which focussed on raising awareness for ptsd
- he looks to help change public opinions towards war and expose the psychological torment faced by many discharged from positions as soldiers
Context in Comh
- agard was born in Guyana which was a British colony and so was raised on a Eurocentric account of history
- when his country became independent from brittish rule he began to undertsand the cultural identity he had been deprived of
- he was inspired in anger after finding school textbooks that claimed the West Indian history was founded by Colombia but his poems look to be inspesific to his area and to appeal to anyone in a coutnry heavily impacted by the west
