Landry and Bartling Study (cognitive) Flashcards
1
Q
Landry and Bartling Study (cognitive)
Aim
A
To reproduce the effect of articulatory suppression on serial recall of a written list of phonologically dissimilar letters and demonstrate the role of the phonological loop in the WMM.
2
Q
Landry and Bartling Study (cognitive)
Procedure
A
- 14 university-aged participants
- 2 groups: control and experimental
- Experimental group experienced articulatory suppression (repeated numbers 1 and 2 while reading the letters) while learning the series of letters
- Each participants had 10 trials (randomized order)
- Letters chosen for the study were phonologically dissimilar (F K L M R X Q)

Q
Landry and Bartling Study (cognitive)
Findings
A
- Experimental group scored lower than the control group
- Supports working model of memory
- Articulatory suppression interferes with the phonological loop
4
Q
Landry and Bartling Study (cognitive)
Strengths
A
- reliable: easy to replicate
5
Q
Landry and Bartling Study (cognitive)
Limitations
A
- Not possible to know whether participants were engaging their phonological loop or visuo-spatial sketchpad to learn the letter sequence
- Modification: Read letter sequence to participants rather than have them read it.

Ethical Considerations
A
- Use of inducement: Bonus points provided in some cases
