Prioritize labs using ABCD
A- low priority, can be ignored
B-concerning, closely monitor
C- Critical, something needs to be done (hold assess prepare call)
D- Highest priority, stay at bedside
Level A Values
Cr- best indicator of renal function (.6-1.2) ->B if dye procedure
BUN- waste in blood (8-25) ->dehydration/IV fluid/call
Bicarb- (22-26)
Level B Values
Hemoglobin- blood (12-18)
-B if (8-11)
-C < 8 : anemia/malnutrition/bleeding/prep blood/call
Hematocrit -(36-54): assess dehydration
BNP- ( < 100): B > 100 indicates CHF monitor for s/sx
RBC (4-6 mil): if abnormal place on neutropenic precautions
Sodium- electrolyte (135-145)
-B if just abnormal ->hypo/hypernatermia, IV fluid/Lasix, call
- if abnormal & LOC
Level C values
INR- monitors coumadin (2-3)
-4 + -> hold coumadin/bleeding/prep vit k/call
Potassium (3.5-5.3)
-C for low -> ekg/prep k/call
-C for high -> hold K/ekg/prep insulin or kayexelate/call
-D for over 6 ->hold K/ekg/prep insulin or kayexelate/call/stay w/ pt
