Acid/Base Balance Flashcards
Normal ABG values
PH: 7.35 to 7.45
CO2: 35 to 45
Hco3: 22 to 26
Arterial Blood Gas Value (ABG) categories
Metabolic acidosis
Metabolic alkalosis
Respiratory acidosis
Respiratory alkalosis
The rule of Bs
If PH & HCO3 (bicarbonate) move in the same direction the acid- base imbalance is metabolic. If it’s opposite it’s respiratory
As the PH goes, so goes my patient, except for Potassium (K)
PH is low, all symptoms low except K
PH is high, all symptoms high except K
If PH is Low then potassium is
High
If PH is high then potassium is
Low
If ph and bicarb move in the same direction the acid base imbalance is..
metabolic
if ph and bicarb move in opposite directions the acid base imbalance is…
respiratory
ph above 7.45
alkalosis
ph below 7.35
acidosis
MAC Kussmaul
only acid base imbalance with kussmaul respirations is Metabolic ACidosis
If its lung then its
respiratory
underventilating is
acidosis
overventilating is
alkalosis
If its NOT lung then its NOT respiratory its
metabolic
