Therapeutic: 10 -20
Non- therapeutic: less than 10 (increase dose & assess compliance)

Bilirubin
NOT A DRUG - product of breakdown of the mother’s RBC in NEWBORNS
elevated: 10 -20
Toxic: over 20 (hospitalize at 14-15)
leads to jaundice

-1s & 10s (therapeutic)
-2s & 20s (toxic)
2s: LOW # -> Lithium & Lanoxin
20s: HIGH # -> aminophylline, dilantin, bilirubin
Jaundice
yellow skin from excess bilirubin in blood
-pathologic (born w/) = problem
-Physiologic (develops) = fine
Kernicterus
excess bilirubin in brain
- level in blood is over 20
-causes aseptic (sterile) meningitis or encephalopathy
-DEADLY
-can lead to Opisthotonos
position newborn assumes; hyperextended posture, MEDICAL EMERGENCY
