Lab List Thursday 6/27/14 Flashcards
Boundaries of temporal fossa
- posteriorly and superiorly: superior and inferior temporal lines
- anteriorly: frontal and zygomatic bones
- laterally: zygomatic arch
- inferiorly: infratemporal crest
- floor: parts of the four bones that form the pterion (frontal, parietal, temporal, greater wing of sphenoid
- roof: temporalis fascia (provides resistance of movement of masseter muscles)
Temporal regions
temporal fossa, located superior to the zygomatic arch
infratemporal fossa, located inferior to the zygomatic arch
Infratemporal fossa, what is it and boundaries?
- irregularly shaped space deep and inferior to the zygomatic arch
- boundaries:
- laterally: ramus of mandible
- medially: lateral pterygoid plate
- anteriorly: posterior aspect of maxilla
- posteriorly: tympanic plate, mastoid and styloid processes of
temporal bone - superiorly: inferior surface greater wing sphenoid bone
- inferiorly: pterygoid muscle attachment to mandible near its angle
Contents of the infratemporal fossa
- inferior part of temporalis muscle
- lateral and medial pterygoid muscles
- maxillary artery
- pterygoid venous plexus
- mandibular, inferior alveolar, lingual, buccal, and chorda tympani nerves
- otic ganglion
Maxillary artery
- larger of the two terminal branches of the external carotid artery
- major artery of the deep face
Branches of the external carotid artery (inferior to superior)
- superior thyroid
- lingual
- facial
- occipital
- ascending pharyngeal
- posterior auricular
(terminal branches)- maxillary
- superficial temporal
What nerve becomes the inferior dental plexus after entering the mandibular foramen?
inferior alveolar nerve
Nerve to mylohyoid
small branch off of inferior alveolar nerve given off just before inferior alveolar nerve enters the mandibular foramen
Mental nerve
passes through mental foramen to supply skin and mucous membrane of the lower lip, skin of chin, incisor teeth
Lingual nerve
Branches off of the posterior branch of mandibular nerve, sensory to anterior 2/3 tongue, floor of mouth, lingual gingivae
Chorda tympani nerve
- branch of CN VII
- presympathetic, parasympathetic secretomotor fibers for submandibular and sublingual salivary glands.
- joins lingual nerve in infratemporal fossa
Temporomandibular joint type
modified hinge type of synovial joint
Lateral ligament (intrinsic) and joint capsule of the temporomandibular joint
connect mandible to the skull by connecting head of mandible to areas on the zygomatic arch
- joint capsule connects closer to the postglenoid tubercle
- lateral ligament connects closer to the articular tubercle
They help to prevent posterior dislocation of the joint
Stylomandibular ligament (extrinsic)
from the styloid process to the angle of the mandible, not very strong
Sphenomandibular ligament (extrinsic)
- runs from the spine of the sphenoid to lingula of the mandible
- primary passive support and “swing rope” of the mandible
