Anterior (ventral)
Front (ex.the toes are anterior to the heel)
Lateral
Toward the side (ex. The ears are lateral to the nose)
Proximal
Closer to point of attachment (ex. The elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Deep
Toward the core (ex. The lungs are deep to the ribs)
Medial
Toward the midline (ex. The sternum is medial to the shoulder)
Sagittal plane
Divides body into left and right portions
Distal
Away from point of attachment (ex. The toes are distal to the knee)
Midsagittal plane
Divides body or organ equally into left and right halves
Superior
Above (ex. The nose is superior to the chin)
Dorsal (posterior)
Back view
Posterior (dorsal)
Back view (ex. The spine is posterior to the sternum)
Peripheral
Away from the center of the body
Transverse plane
Divides body or organ into top and bottom halves (horizontal)
Frontal (coronal) plane
Divides body into front and back halves (posterior and anterior)
