Lab 3: Cardiovascular Physiology Flashcards
Define BRADYCARDIA
HR less than 60 bpm
Define TACHYCARDIA
HR more than 100 bpm
When is the best time to take resting HR?
Right when you wake up
What effect does the SYMPATHETIC NS (NE) have on HR?
Inc. HR because NE binds to B1 receptors
What effect does the PARASYMPATHETIC NS (Ach) have on HR?
Dec. HR because Ach binds to M2 receptors
What effect does caffeine have on HR?
Inc. because caffeine in high doses raises your blood level of epinephrine
What effect does Codeine have on HR?
Dec. because it is a depressant drug so it slows down HR
What effect does Nicotine have on HR?
Inc. because… I don’t know… it just does
What effect does ANEMIA have on HR?
Inc. because the HEART is trying to compensate for the lack of blood
What effect does Hypothyroidism have on HR?
Dec. because the reduced level of thyroid hormone causes the heart muscle to pump less vigorously and eventually to become weakened
What are some factors that might cause a person’s BP to be elevated?
Stress, exercise, sitting vs standing, circadium rhythm
Define HYPERTENSION

What is secondary HYPERTENSION?
High BP with an identifiable cause (disease)
2 things contributing to HYPERTENSION are…
