L7: Disc Prolapse Flashcards
Types of Disc Prolapse
- Acc to Timeframe
- Acute & Gradual
Types of Disc Prolapse
- Acute
Types of Disc Prolapse
- Gradual
Types of Disc Prolapse
- Type of protrueded Material
- The protruded material in both acute & gradual being first soft, then become fibrotic and later calcified and bony hard.
Direction of Protrusion in Disc Prolapse
Site of Cervical Disc Prolapse
- C5-6, C6-7 discs.
- C5-6-disc compress C6 root
Direction of Protrusion in Cervical Disc Prolapse
- Lateral: in intravertebral foramen → root pain (brachialgia) Due to pressure by disc, osteophytes, ischemia & later fibrosis of root sheath.
- Posterior → cord (by direct pressure or ischemia) → quadriplegia.

Vertebral artery ascends in Ts foramina of cervical vertebrae.
Investigations for Cervical Disc Prolapse
Def of Sciatica
Pain along distribution of sciatic nerve, commonly d2 Lumbar Disc Prolapse
Anatomy of Sciatic Nerve
Sciatic nerve derived from L4-5, S1,2,3 segments
Direction in Lumbar Disc Prolapse
Etiology of Sciatica
A. Degenerative changes
B. Trauma usually bending to lift heavy objects
