L6: Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
What property distinguishes lipids from other biomolecules
A
- Insoluble in water / hydrophobic
2. Long HC chain
2
Q
Structure of lipid / Triacylglycerol
A
- 3 fatty acyl chain (1 unsaturated, 2 saturated) + glycerol
- ester linkage
3
Q
Classification of lipid
A
- Neutral lipid (storage)
- Triacylglycerol - Polar lipid / Amphiphile (membrane)
- Phospholipid (Glycerophospholipid and Sphingolipid, form liposome)
- Cholesterol (form bile salt, steroid hormones, lipoprotein, membrane, Vitamin D)
- Glycolipid
4
Q
Components of chylomicrons
A
- Phospholipid
- Cholesterol (intercalated between phospholipid)
- Apolipoprotein (from Rough ER)
- TAG / Cholesteryl ester
5
Q
How is lipid transported in our body
A
- Dietary TAG
- Emulsification
- Pancreatic lipase digestion (TAG —> 2 monoacylglycerol + FA)
- Transcellular absorption
- Reesterification in smooth ER to TAG, packaged with B-48 apolipoprotein from rough ER in Golgi apparatus —> Chylomicrons
- Exocytosis
- Travel in lymph —> blood —> muscle, adipose tissue + liver (remnants: for recycling of materials e.g. amino acids, cholesterol)
- Lipoprotein lipase activated by ApoC2 —> digest TAG in chylomicron
- FA either oxidised to yield ATP / re-esterified with glycerol for storage
6
Q
Beta oxidation of fatty acid
A
Fatty acid —(β oxidation)—> Acetyl CoA, NADH, FADH2
