WHO definition of health
State of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Definition of illness
Perception of oneself being sick
Changes in pattern of mortality
- Acute to chronic causes
- Childhood survival improved in developed countries
- Adulthood life expectancy little changed
- Mortality due to infectious disease declined because cause can be identified
What contributed to change in pattern of mortality
(BCDE) 4 categories: Economic, Cultural, Domestic, Behavioural
Positive change
1. Nature of work
2. Improved income
3. Food availability
3. Food hygiene legislation —> Better nutrition, drinking water
4. Improved infrastructure: living conditions, sewage disposal
5. Labour rights, social security
6. Education
7. Decline in fertility rate
—> family size, age distribution, birth spacing
—> increase in median age of infection, lower case fatality rate
—> more children survived —> mean age of population increased
Negative change
- Increase in body mass
- Tobacco/alcohol use
- Overconsumption
- Social pressure/ alienation
