L39: Host Microbe Relationship And Microbial Pathogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
Incubation period
A
Time elapsed between exposure and symptom appearance
2
Q
Latent infection
A
- Pathogens are not actively dividing (dormant)
- still viable and infectious / transmitted
- clearance is not complete, no apparent symptoms
- can be reactivated
3
Q
Chronic infection
A
Low level replication vs clearance
—> still cause tissue damage
4
Q
Slow chronic infection
A
Subacute problem but levels of infectious virus slowly increasing
E.g. measles virus —> subacute sclerosing panencephalitis
5
Q
Characteristics of virulent pathogen
A
- Low infective dose
- High attack rate
- Number and potency of virulence factors: colonise, proliferate, invade, modify
- High morbidity and mortality
6
Q
6 steps of pathogenesis
A
- Encounter: exogenous / endogenous (normal flora)
- Entry: inhalation / ingestion / bites / contact / transplant
- Spread: local (symptoms may be systemic due to cytokines)/ systemic (lymphatic, bloodstream, nerve) —> cell/organ trophism
- Multiplication
- Damage
- Outcome: invade vs defend, inoculum size, mode of inoculation, medical treatment
7
Q
Endotoxin-mediated disease
A
- Cholera
- Diphtheria
- Tetanus
