L4 Chronic Inflammation and Healing Flashcards
Characteristics of cytokines
proteins, paracrine and autocrine, regulate chronic inflammation, can be pro-inflammatory, repair inducing, natural anti-inflammatory
Examples of pro-inflammatory cytokines
IL-1
TNF
What do pro-inflammatory cytokines cause
vasodilation -> adhesion -> chemotaxis -> activation of cells -> tissue breakdown, pain, platelet aggregation, fibroblast proliferation, angiogenesis
What is a pannus
site of active bone loss in rheumatoid arthritis
What is the process of wound healing
fibrin clot -> granulation tissue -> clot retracts and epidermal cells grow -> granulation tissue reabsorbed and wound healed
What are the two types of cut healing and what are the characteristics
- primary indention - edges of wound are joined with little inflammation
- secondary indention - edges of wound not opposed, likely to involve granulation tissue, inflammation and scarring
What are some factors influencing healing
nutrition, poor blood flow, diabetes, immunosuppression, infection
