L10 Cardiac Failure Flashcards
7 good reasons to check BP
vasculature heart abdominal aortic aneurysm aortic dissection brain eyes kidney
3 clinical syndromes of IHD
angina
MI
sudden cardiac death
Characteristics of acute cardiac failure
L or R sided
L = pink frothy sputum
no time for compensation mechanisms
R usually caused by pulmonary embolus
Characteristics of chronic cardiac failure
most common cause is previous cardiac failure
starts as LHF and becomes RHF
What is congestive heart failure
compensate for less blood flow = increased HR
hypoxia
major organs suffer
What are the causes of LHF?
IHD
hypertension
aortic and mitral valve disease
myocardial disease
What can RHF be caused by?
LHF
What are the compensatory mechanisms?
acute = increased sympathetic nervous system activation which increases contractility and HR (frank-starling)
What is cor pulmonale
RVF due to pulmonary arterial hypertension due to lung disease
