L10: Organisations of the Nervous System Flashcards
2 nervous systems
1) Central Nervous System (CNS)
2) Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What does CNS contain?
1) Brain
2) Spinal Cord
What does PNS contain?
1) Motor Neuron
2) Sensory Neuron
What 2 systems can motor neurons be a part of ?
1) Somatic Nervous System
2) Autonomic Nervous System
Role of sensory neurones
Take information from sensory organs to CNS
Role of motor neurons
Take information from CNS to muscle/glands
Role of spinal cord
Conducts signals to & from the brain
Role of somatic nervous system
Controls voluntary movements
Role of autonomic nervous system
Controls involuntary responses
2 division in the autonomic nervous system
1) Sympathetic
2) Parasympathetic
What is the sympathetic division?
“fight or flight”
What is the parasympathetic division?
“rest or digest”
What is peripheral nervous system made up of?
Somatic + Visceral
What does the somatic nervous system contain?
1) Motor Fibres
2) Sensory Fibres
What are motor fibres also called?
General somatic efferents (GSEs)
What are sensory fibres also called?
General somatic afferents (GSAs)
What is a CNS neuron?
Neuron that is entirely contained within the brain or spinal cord
What is a PNS neuron
Any part of a neurone that projects outside of the CNS
What does the coronal plane show of the brain?
Back of head
What does the horizontal plane show of the brain?
Cross section
What does the sagittal plane of the brain show?
Side profile
What is white matter?
Mostly axons (forming fibres)
What is grey matter?
Cell bodies
What does grey matter contain?
Nuclei
Name the grooves on the cerebrum
Sulci (sulcus)
What does white matter contain?
Myelinated axons
Name the bumps/ridges on the cerebrum
Gyri (gyrus)
Name the deep grooves on the cerebrum
Fissures
4 main subdivisions of the brain
1) Forebrain
2) Midbrain
3) Hindbrain
4) Spinal cord
What is the hindbrain made up of ?
1) Pons
2) Cerebellum
3) Medulla
What makes up the forebrain?
Cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus
Name given to
midbrain + pons + medulla oblongata together?
Brain stem
4 lobes in the cerebrum
1) Frontal Lobe
2) Parietal Lobe
3) Occipital Lobe
4) Temporal Lobe
Function of the frontal lobe
Thinking
Function of the parietal lobe
Sensory processing, spelling
Function of the occipital lobe
Vision
Function of the temporal lobe
Memory, language
When does the 1st spinal nerve emerges?
Between the skull & vertebrae C1
When does C8 emerges ?
Between vertebrae C7 & T1
How many pairs of spinal nerves in the spinal cord?
31 pairs
What does it mean when spinal nerves are ‘mixed’ ?
Contains motor & sensory fibres
Where is the cell body of the sensory neurone found?
Dorsal root ganglion
Where is the cell body of the motor neuron found?
Ventral horn
What are nerve rootlets?
Come together to form individual nerves in the spinal cord
What is the scientific term for when spinal nerves hang down the spinal cord?
Cauda Equina
What are the empty spaces in the brain filled with?
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
What is the brain full of ?
Neurons + Glia
How many ventricles in the brain?
4
What are the different ventricles in the brain?
1) 2 lateral ventricles
2) 1/3rd ventricle
3) 1/4th ventricle
Role of the choroid plexus
Line all the ventricles in the brain
What cells make up the choroid plexus?
Ependymal Cells
Are ependymal cells neurons or glial cells?
Glial Cells
What is the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) made by ?
Choroid Plexus Epithelium
What does it mean if the choroid plexus epithelium is highly vascularised ?
Develops blood vessels
4 functions of CSF
1) Buoyancy
2) Protection
3) Removal of waste products
4) Growth & signalling factors
3 layers of meninges in the CNS
1) Innermost pia mater
2) Intermediate arachnoid mater
3) Outermost dura mater
What does the CSF leave the ventricular system through?
Apertures (foramina)
3 functions of the pia mater
1) Protects the CNS
2) Allows entry of blood vessels into the CNS
3) Impermeable layer to contain CSF
Why is arachnoid mater called this?
Like ‘spider web’ around the brain
3 functions of the arachnoid mater
1) Protects the CNS
2) Cob-web like membrane to form sub-arachnoid space
3) Closely associated to the dura mater
Where is the CSF found?
Sub-arachnoid space
Where is the sub-arachnoid space?
Between pia mater & arachnoid mater
Where does the CSF end up after it is drained out through the arachnoid granulation?
Superior sagittal sinus
