Lower genital tract infection: infection below internal os (vulvitis, vaginitis & cervicitis).
Upper genital tract infection: Infection above internal os (PID).
Classifications of female genital tract infection
- Etiological
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
- Blood born infections: mostly TB and rare now.
- Endogenous infections: caused by overgrowth of microbial agents that are normal Inhabitants (as candida albicans or bacterial vaginosis).

- Local cleanliness.
- Small dose of estrogen (to help eradication of infection).

- Lack of estrogen (as in postmenopausal women or in prepubertal age).

Vagina becomes smooth, dry, thin with itching and severe dyspareunia

- Gonorrhea or non-specific infection.

- Gland becomes palpable as mass in the posterior 1/3 of labia majora, tender with abscess formation in some cases
TTT of Bartholinitis
antibiotics and drainage (if abscess forms) OR marsupialization with recurrent cases.

it is the second most common cause of vaginitis.
Causative Organsims of Candidiasis
- candida albicans 90% of cases, c. tropicalis and c. glabrata 10% of cases

- Flourishes in acidic media
- so common in diabetics, during pregnancy, with antibiotic use, with COCs, with antibiotics or steroids and immunosuppressive drugs.

- alternation of normal flora; decrease lactobacilli and increase Gardnerella and anaerobes.

Symptoms of Bacterial vaginosis
- 50% may be asymptomatic
- BUT there may be thin excessive greyish frothy malodorous discharge with pruritus
