What Are Internal genital Organs?
- Vagina
- Cervix
- Uterus
- Fallopian Tubes
- Ovaries
Def of Vagina
- It is a fibro-muscular organ extending from the vulva to the uterus.
Shape of Vagina
- Inverted flask in longitudinal section (its upper end is twice capacious than its lower end).
- Flattened H in cross section (Ant. & Post. walls lie in contact, but lateral walls remain rigid).
Length of Vagina
Anterior wall β 7- 9 cm
Posterior wall β 9 - 11 cm
Extent of Vagina
Upwards & backwards from vestibule to cervix.
Ends of Vagina
Lower end:
- Closed by hymen in virgins.
Upper end:
- Blind & is called vaginal vault.
Axis of Vagina
Longitudinal axis of vagina is parallel to plane of pelvic inlet forming angle of about
- 55Β° with horizontal line in standing position
- 90Β° with longitudinal axis of cervix.

Histology of Vagina
Histology of Vagina
- epithelium
Epitheium of Vagina
- Estrogen helps β¦β¦.
- The rugae harbor certain organism known as Doderlinβs bacilli that is responsible for vaginal acidity [PH at 4.5] by breaking down glycogen and releasing lactic acid.
- The action of these bacilli is stimulated by estrogen.
Epitheium of Vagina
- Doderlein bacilli (lactobacilli)
- The rugae harbor certain organism known as Doderlinβs bacilli that is responsible for vaginal acidity [PH at 4.5] by breaking down glycogen and releasing lactic acid.
Epitheium of Vagina
- There are no glands in vagina but it is kept moist by serous transudate from its wall & by cervical discharge.

Histology of Vagina
- Tunica Propria
thin layer of elastic vascular connective tissues.
Histology of Vagina
- Muscle Layer
- thin layer of musculo-facial envelope that surrounds the vagina and continuous above with that of the cx and uterus
Histology of Vagina
- Adventetia (Paracolpos)
Blood Supply of Vagina
Blood Supply of Vagina
- Arterial
Blood Supply of Vagina
- Venous
- accompany the corresponding arteries and drain to the internal iliac vein.
Lymphatic Drainage of Vagina
