L03 - Biodiversity Flashcards
Define Biodiversity (6)
Biodiversity describes the whole range of the different varieties of living things on this earth including animal species, plant species, etc
It is the variability among living organisms from all sources = Marine biodiversity refers to variability of marine life.
Why is Biodiversity important?
There are 250,000 known species of marine plants and animals, many are food for other organisms.
Many form the base of the food chain.
In general, everything in the oceans are there for a reason. Thus disturbing or loss of biodiversity will impact everybody.
Conservation of biodiversity means protection of ecosystem as well as
protection of marine life and marine habitats.
What are the areas with the greatest biodiversity?
- Estuaries
- Coastlines
- Deep-ocean floor
- Coral reefs
- Mangrove areas
- Sea-grass beds
- These will be known as marine habitats, where one can find the highest level of biodiversity.
