what is being assessed when looking at the knee?
gait and stance
standing: valgus/varus, deformity, popliteal
supine: scars, symmetry, swelling, wasting
what are you assessing when feeling the knee?
temp
patella: tenderness, subluxation
Popliteal: swellings, cyst
Effusion(bulging): sweep medial, over and down, look for refil
effusion (tap): compress fluid above, press patella
joint line (flex knee): tenderness
what are you assessing when moving the knee
active and passive ROM
palpate for crepitus
which ligaments are assessed?
posterior cruciate
anterior cruciate
medial and lateral cruciate
what is the sign of PCL damage
posterior sag
what is the sign of ACL damage
anterior draw or lachmans
what is the sign for MCL And LCL problems
valgus and varus stress
what are the special tests
mcmurrays
flex hip and knee, extend knee in ext and int rotation, assess click/pain
what else can be offered
examine joint above and below (hip and ankle)
