gait and stance
standing: tilt, deformity, wasting and fixed flexion
supine: scars, symmetry, leg length (measure)
what are you assessing when feeling?
temperature, greater trochanter
what are you assessing when moving the leg
active ROM
passive ROM
flex, extend, abduct, adduct, int/ext rotation
special tests
Thomas test
Trendelenburgs test
describe Thomas test
supine
hand under lumbar spine
flex one hip, observe other hip
fixed flexion: other hip flexes as well
describe trendelenbergs
standing
patient stands on one leg
observe contralateral hip
normal: hips remain level
weak abductors contralateral hip drops
what extras would you offer?
examine joint above and below (spine and knee)
lower limb neuro and vasc exam
