KKDP 4: Health Status indicators Flashcards
Self-Assessed Health Status (SAHS)
Self-Assessed Health Status: an overall measure of a population’s health based on an individual’s own perception of their health.
- It allows someone to judge their own level of health by rating their physical functioning, emotional wellbeing, level of pain and discomfort and overall perception of health.
Life expectancy (LE)
an indication of how long a person can expect to live (from birth), if death rates do not change. (‘Quantity of life’)
Health adjusted life expectancy (HALE)
the number of ‘healthy’ years a person can expect to live, based on current rates of ill health & mortality. (‘Quality of life’)
morbidity
Refers to ill health in an individual and the levels of ill health in a population or group
mortality
deaths caused by disease, illness or an environmental factor.
maternal mortality
number of deaths of women due to pregnancy or child-birth related complications.
Infant mortality rate
number of deaths of children under the age of one year in a given time period, per 1000 live births.
Under-5 Mortality Rate
is the number of deaths of children under five years of age, per 1000 live births
Burden of Disease BOD
measures the impact of diseases & injuries; it measures the gap between current health status & an ideal situation where everyone lives to old age free of disease & disability. BOD is measured using DALY.
DALY
DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) = YLL + YLD
a measure of overall disease burden, expressed as the cumulative number of years lost due to ill health, disability or early death
YLL
Where YLL is the ‘Years of Life Lost due to premature death’ (i.e. Mortality)
YLD
Years of Life lived with Disability or Illness’ (i.e. Morbidity)
Incidence
is the number or rate of NEW cases of a particular condition during a specific time.
Prevalence
is the number or proportion of (NEW AND OLD) cases of a particular disease/condition present in a population at a given time.
