WHO definition of health
Health is state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity
WHO definition of health and wellbeing
Relates to a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence and is characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable, and engaged
Subjective H&W
- Influenced by personal feelings and opinions; it is the way an individual perceives their own health and wellbeing.
- Being free from illness and disease is often at the core of how a person feels about their health and wellbeing; including levels of fitness, mobility and body weight.
Dynamic H&W
- H&W is constantly changing
- Changes can occur quickly in response to a range of internal and external factors; for example; illness, injury and relationship breakdown.
- Health and wellbeing can also improve in a relatively short period of time due to medical interventions such as medication
Eight factors influencing how individuals view overall H&W:
- Age
- Fitness
- Body weight
- Social network
- Income
- Occupation
- Education
- Culture
ILLNESS
a subjective concept relating to the state of feeling unwell based on personal
experience of a disease.
For example: feeling unwell, usually due to a specific condition stopping the body from functioning normally.
DISEASE
physical or mental disturbance involving symptoms, dysfunction or tissue damage. The actual ailment someone suffers from.
For example: A broken leg

Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social
Physical H&W
refers to the effective functioning of the body and its systems, including a person’s physical capacity to perform tasks and physical fitness.
Physical H&W can be measured by:
- Well-functioning body systems and organs
- Healthy body weight
- Freedom from illness, disease and injury
- Adequate energy levels
- Ability to complete physical tasks adequately
- Appropriate levels of fitness
- Strong immune system
Mental H&W
the current state of well-being relating to the mind or brain and it relates to the ability to think and process information. Mental health is about the wellness of the mind rather than illness.
Mental H&W can be measured by:
- Positive thought patterns
- Use logic and reasoning to form opinions and make decisions
- High levels of confidence
- process information to solve problems
- positive self-esteem
- Low levels of stress and anxiety
Social H&W
being able to interact with others and participate in the community in an independent and cooperative way.
Social H&W can be measured by:
- Productive relationships with other people
- Supportive network of friends
- Supportive and well-functioning family
- Ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations
- Effective communication with others
Emotional H&W
being able to manage and express feelings in a healthy way /positive way and display resilience in everyday life.
