Kiribati - government lead climate change adaptions Flashcards
1
Q
Impacts of climate change - Kiribati
A
- Water and food shortages
- Flooding
- Damage to infrastructure and displacement
- Salinisation of soils and fresh water
- Ocean acidification kills coral so less protection form storms
2
Q
Why is Kiribati vulnerable?
A
- mostly 2-3m above sea level
- Poor quality of soils = bad agriculture
- 80% population unemployed
- Almost no tourism as no facilities, infrequent transport connections and poor infrastructure
- Soils don’t retain moisture = water shortages
- Vulnerable to el nino and la nina events
3
Q
Solutions - Kiribati
A
- sea walls
- planting mangroves
- Improving knowledge and info
- Promoting reliable infrastructure and land management
- Promoting use of sustainable energy production
- Kiribati Joint Implementation Plan (KJIP).
4
Q
sea wall advantages and disadvantages
A
Advantages:
- Protect houses and infrastructure
- Don’t have to be expensive eg. people use sandbags, tires etc
- Provide temporary jobs
Disadvantages:
- Temporary
- Have to be repaired and rebuilt
5
Q
mangroves advantages and disadvantages
A
Advantages:
- Slow down and disperse incoming waves
- Provide habitat for marine species for food
- Absorb carbon dioxide
- Filter nutrient runoff from land so reduce ocean pollution
- Relatively maintenance free
Disadvantage:
- Less effective then sea walls at protecting
- Take a while to grow
