A
  • skills and points based system
  • highly selective but successful
  • small population compared to land size and ageing population = demand for immigrants and supports the economy
  • benefited as it’s an island so no borders making illegal immigration harder

EU and UK migration policies

A
  • Schengen zone (1995) gives EU citizens freedom of movement = no border control or visa checks
  • UK left Eurozone 2018 = increased illegal migration and deportation to Rwanda
  • Increasing numbers of asylum seekers (from Eastern Europe and middle east seeking refuge west + south)
  • EU citizens make up 53% of those who are denied entry to UK
  • some travel to turkey as sea voyage is shorter and UK paid Turkish government to keep immigrants in Turkey
