- state collapse and political conflict
- civil conflict between leader and rebels = leader withholding food from population
- parts of Sudan had no rain for the last 2 years
- causes high food prices
- also made worse by influx of refugees from Sudan and over 3 mil displaced by conflict = no organisation, farms etc
- most rely on farming

effects
A
- hard to hand out food as people can’t get to distribution sites due to conflict
- food and cattle taken by soldiers in conflict who aren’t paid so are allowed to take whatever they want
- over 1 mil children under 5 severely malnourished
- 6 mil (about 60% of population) experiencing extreme hunger
