- Some near porto - div 1 and 2
- Div 3s mostly isolated
- Most near the coast
- no div 1 inland
- not many down south as too hot and dry for grass
- historical link with universities eg. Porto associated with CDUP
- some established by players returning to hometowns e.g. Évora
- football clubs diversified sports to include Rugby e.g. Benfica

why is rugby small compared to football
A
- Less national attention on rugby
- Less people play rugby
- The national rugby team rarely take part in things like world cup etc
- not a mass spectator sport - even div 1 usually a few hundred people watching
- small catchment area
