Kingdom plantae Flashcards
1
Q
What are the characteristics of kingdom plantae?
A
- Eukariotic
- Multicellular
- Photosythetic
- Cell walls of cellulose
- Embryos proteced b parental tissue
2
Q
Whats the earliest ancestor of plants?
A
the earliest land plants may have evolved from algal organisms ( a colony of protists)
3
Q
What are the 4 different plant types?
A
- Vascular plants
- Non vascular plants
- Spore producing vascular plants
- Seed producing vascular plants
4
Q
Whats the characteristics of non vascular plants?
A
- Does not grow tall (mosses)
- Live is shady moist environments
- Lack true roots, stems, leaves, and vascular system
- They are also spore producing or seed producing
5
Q
What are the characteristics of vascular plants?
A
- No vascular tissues
- Has conducting tissue
- xylem
6
Q
What are the characteristics of spore producing vascular plants?
A
- Primarily grow in marshes and along edges of stremes
- Ex: club mosses and horse tails
- Primarily grow in shady wet environments
- Ex: ferns
7
Q
What are the reoriductive system of gymnosperms?
A
- Pollen cones (male)
- Seed cones (female)
8
Q
How do gymnospersm work?
A
- Pollen dispersed by wind
- Pollen produces sperm when contact is made with seed cone
- Sperm fertilizes ovules
-Zygotes grow into seeds
9
Q
What is the largest gymnosperm?
A
Conifers (AKA soft wood)
10
Q
What are the characteristics of angiosperms?
A
- Known as the flowering plants
- Most successful plants on earth
- Well protected by seeds
- Variety of seed dispersal methods(water, wind, animals)
11
Q
How do angiosperms reproduce?
A
- Ovum fertilized by sperms(from pollen)
- Zygote developes into an embryo contained in a seed
- Seeds are enclosed in a fruit
- Seeds must be released from fruit in order to pollinate
