Characteristics of animals Flashcards
What are the characteristics of animals?
- Heterotrophic,multicellular eukaryotes
- No cell walls
- Oxygen for aerobic respiration
- Almost all animals have specialized nervous tissue
What are classification schemes used?
- Number of germ layers
- Type of body symmerty (Asymmetrical, radial symmetry, bilateral)
- Presence/absence of a coelom
What do the germ layers do?
Give rise to specific tissues and organs
What are the 3 different types of germ layers?
- Endoderm
- Ectoderm
- Mesoderm
What does the endoderm do?
Its the digestive and respiratory layer
What does the ectoderm do?
Its the outer covering and nervous system
What does the mesoderm do?
Its the circulatory, muscles, and skeletal systems
What are the germ layers in diploblastic acelomates?
Has only gut, endoderm and ectoderm
What are the germ layers in triploblastic acoelomates?
Has only a gut, endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm
Whats the symmetry of diploblasts?
Radial symmerty
Whats the symmetry of triploblasts?
Bilateral
What is cephilization?
- Concentration of sensory organs at the anterior (front end)
- Found in bilateral organisms
What is a coelom?
Mesoderm may develop into a fluid filled internal body cavity.
Whats in a coelom?
Contains: gut, organs, and epidermis
What are the characteristics of Coelom acoelomates?
-Mesoderm filled with tissue
- Still have a gut
