Biodiversity Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem
What is genetic diversity? (within species)
offspring of a species that reproduce sexually inherit unique combinations of traits from their parents
Whats an example of genetic diversity?
Hair, eye, and skin colour in humans
What is species diversity? (between species)
The variety of species in an area and the total population of each of these species
Whats an example of Species diversity?
An area with 10 species each with 500 individuals is more biodiverse than an area with 50 individuals
What is structural diversity/ ecosystem diversity?
Range of physical structure of the habitat or ecosystem that the organisms are living in. (shape and size)
What are examples of structural diversity/ ecosystem diversity?
Ex: aquatic ecosystems have rocks, reefs, logs, sunken ships
Whats a species
A groups whose members are able to freely breed among themselves and produce fertile off spring. ( this is also known as the biological concept)
* Note that members of different species usuallt so not breed with one another.
What is mutualism?
When both parties benefit
What is parasitism?
One benefits, the other suffers
What is commensalism?
One benefits, the other is unaffected
What is obligate?
Needs the relationship to live
