What are the 4 safety considerations when picking an appropriate toy for a child?

A
  1. No small toys for children under 4 yrs of age, no small parts - aspiration risk.
  2. No metal (dye cast) toys if O2 is in use b/c sparks.
  3. Beware of Fomites - non living objects that harbors microorganisms. (vector host harbors living organisms)
  4. Age appropriate
    - Infancy 0-6 mth
    - 6-9 mth
    - 9-12 mth
    - Toddlers 1-3 yrs
    - Preschool
    - School Age
    - Adolescents

Musical Mobile b/c sensory motors or something soft, large, so they don’t choke or hurt themselves.

  • Object Permanence Stage
  • Idea that its still there when its not. “peak-a-boo”
  • teach object permanence i.e. cover/uncover toy.
  • Jack n box, window books.
  • Large hard toy - wood or hard plastic
  • Under 9 mths DO NOT PICK toys with the words build, sort, stack, make, construct.

  • No finger dexterity at this age. so don’t pick coloring, scissors, etc for this age, just finger painting,
