When selecting approapriate toys or play activities for children what 3 things should you consider?
- Is it safe
- Is it age appropriate
- is it feasible
What are the 4 safety considerations when picking an appropriate toy for a child?
- No small toys for children under 4 yrs of age, no small parts - aspiration risk.
- No metal (dye cast) toys if O2 is in use b/c sparks.
- Beware of Fomites - non living objects that harbors microorganisms. (vector host harbors living organisms)

- Infancy 0-6 mth
- 6-9 mth
- 9-12 mth
- Toddlers 1-3 yrs
- Preschool
- School Age
- Adolescents
Describe toys best suited for the Infancy 0-6 mth
Musical Mobile b/c sensory motors or something soft, large, so they don’t choke or hurt themselves.
Describe toys best suited for the 6-9 mth
- Object Permanence Stage
- Idea that its still there when its not. “peak-a-boo”
- teach object permanence i.e. cover/uncover toy.
- Jack n box, window books.
- Large hard toy - wood or hard plastic
- Under 9 mths DO NOT PICK toys with the words build, sort, stack, make, construct.
Describe toys best suited for the 9-11 mths
- Vocalization
- speaking toys
- talking books
Describe toys best suited for the Toddlers 1-3 yrs
- Push pull toys
- Work on gross motor skills
- Running, jumping.
- Parallel play - they play along side, but not with.
- No finger dexterity at this age. so don’t pick coloring, scissors, etc for this age, just finger painting,
Describe type of play best suited for the Preschooler
Work on fine motor - finger dexterity
balance - skating, gymnastics
etc
Cooperative play - Highly imaginitive - pretend play

Think 3 “C’s”
Creative - blank paper and pencil crayons
Collective - always collecting
Competitive - like to play games with winner or loser
Legos good for this age.

Peer-group association Let them hang out with friends unless... - anyone is < 12hrs post op - anyone is immunosuppressed - anyone is contagious
