What is the difference between Dumping syndrome and Hiatal Hernia?
They are both emptying problems.
They are opposite from each-other.
Describe Dumping Syndrome
Post-op gastric surgery complication usually rolling gastric by-pass surgery in which the gastric contents dump quickly into he Duodenum.
Gastric contents move in the right direction at the wrong rate. Think traffic violation - speeding.
Signs and Symptoms of Dumping Syndrome
THINK ADS - Acute Dumping Syndrome
A = Abdominal Distress D = Drunk S = Shock
So…abdominal distress plus hypoglycemia symptoms
Treatment Dumping Syndrome
- HOB: Low, flat or Left side
- < Fluids
- Diet: Low Carb, High Protien
Describe Hiatal Hernia
Regurgitation of acid into the Esophagus b/c upper stomach herniates upward thru the Diaphragm therefore end up with a 2 chamber stomach.
Gastric move in the wrong direction at the correct pace.
Think traffic violation: Going the wrong way on a one way street.
Signs and Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia
Think GERD
G = Gastro E = Esophageal R = Reflex D = Disease
Note: its a Hiatal Hernia if you get GERD after you lay down after eating - heartburn, indigestion
Treatment for Hiatal Hernia
Want stomach to empty faster to relax symptoms.
