Alphabetic Principle
Awareness of the association between letters and sounds or letter-sound relationships
Orthographic Knowledge
Involves storing and accessing words from memory and writing them using conventions and rules of written language (reading and spelling)
(whole) Word Reading
looking at word and saying it as a whole word; encompasses word recognition and word identification skills
Phonological Awareness
Being alert to the sounds of spoken words as well as operation, discrimination and manipulation of those words. (NOT written language)
Difference between phonemic awareness and Phonics
- Phonemic awareness is the smaller units of spoken letters (single letter or small words like “go”)
- Phonics: (written language) sound relations to read or spell words
Oral Reading Fluency
reading aloud in flowing, accurate, quick, and expressive manner. This is the bridge between recognizing words accurately and comprehending text.
