Rastafarianism
A religious and political movement which emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s, blending protestant Christianity, Mysticism, and Pan-African political consciousness.
Pop Music Icon
A celebrity who is widely known across multiple generations and is seen as a defining aspect of their society and era.
Reggae
A genre of music from Jamaica, beginning in the 1960’s, made internationally famous by Bob Marley. Grew out of ska music, led to the creation of dub music.
One-Drop
A reggae drum groove, with offbeat accents on the “hi hat” and accents on beats 2 and 4 on bass drum and snare drum with cross-stick (Example: “I shot the sheriff” - Bob Marley).
Dancehall
A style of Jamaican pop music that rose to popularity in the 1970’s, 1980’s. Dancehall features a DJ signing and rapping over a rhythm track.
Dembow Beat
Classic reggaeton drum groove, featuring bass drum on 4 quarter notes per bar, with snare drum playing 3+3+2 rhythm (a of 1&2) (Example: “Ojitos Lindos” by Bad Bunny).
Reggaeton
A form of party music emerging in Puerto Rico in the 1990’s, influenced by dancehall and hip-hop, sung/rapped in Spanish.
