Ballad
A type of slow song, usually delivered with emotional intensity, found in many different genres of music. (Example: ‘Isfahan’ by Duke Ellington, ‘Long River’ by Angelique Francis, ‘Daughter’ by Beyonce, etc.)
Improvisation
Creating music on the spot, in the moment, in response to the
performance situation and the musical choices of fellow performers.
Jazz standards
A set of repertoire written between 1930-1970 commonly used for
performing traditional jazz music, for which the melody and chords are predetermined and everything else is improvised.
Trading
An improvisation method in which members of the band take turns playing short solos of the same length each (i.e. trading 4 bars, 8 bars, choruses, etc), over the chord progression of the song.
