Blues music
Style of music originating in 1860s rural southern US, with
direct, emotional and sensual lyrics, usually featuring the guitar as primary accompaniment. Blues influenced many other genres of music including jazz, rock, country, heavy metal.
12-bar blues form
A harmonic structure for song sections created in blues music and often used throughout many genres of music including rock and jazz. The lyric structure of 12-bar blues often follows an A-A-B pattern.
Cultural appropriation
Taking a cultural identity for which you do not have long-term lived experience, and for which you do not understand the meanings and significance of the culture, and presenting that culture as your own.
Call and Response
A musical device used in songs where there is a short response (from the audience, from other singer(s), or from the same person) that follows each lead line of vocals from a singer or rapper.
The Great Migration
Between 1910-1970, approximately 6 million African Americans moved from the American South to Northern, Midwestern, and Western US, to escape racial violence.
