Indigenous Renaissance Flashcards
Cultural Appropriation
Taking a cultural identity for which you do not have long-term lived experience, and for which you do not understand the meanings and significance of the culture, and presenting that culture
as your own.
Authenticity
For Tanya Tagaq, “Art is best expressed when you are expressing your own reality, your own thoughts, feelings and culture.”
Wolastoqey
Language from Wolastoq nation in eastern Canada.
(Example: Jeremy Dutcher’s album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa is
sung in Wolastoqey)
Bridge People
A term used by Jeremy Dutcher to describe people who grow
up in an environment where multiple cultures are present. Bridge people can
become a conduit through which multiple cultures can communicate.
Inuit throat singing:
A style of singing where traditionally two women or
girls stand face to face and breathe short rhythmic patterns, which are inhaled and exhaled, voiced and unvoiced, as a call-and-response duet. (Example: Tanya Tagaq sings in this style as a solo vocalist)
Ostinato
A repeating rhythm (usually not from the drums) which lasts
throughout one or more sections of a song as a musical foundation to which other musical elements are added. (Example: beginning of Jeremy Dutcher’s song “Ultestakon”)
