Key Terms- Definitions Flashcards
Diffusion
Net movement of particles from an area of high conc to an area of low conc down a conc gradient
Osmosis
The movement of water from a dilute to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane that allows water to pass through
Active transport
The absorption of substances against (up) a concentration gradient
Using energy from respiration
Cells can absorb ions from dilute solutions
Mitosis
Cell division that produces two identical cells
Asexual reproduction
For growth, repair also
Meristems
Root and shoot tips where mitosis continues to take place in a plant
Meiosis
Reproductive organ cells divide to form the gametes
Tumour
A mass of abnormally growing cells
Result from the abnormal uncontrolled growth of cells
Benign tumour
Grows in one place
Doesn’t invade other tissues
Grow v large v quickely
Causes pressure and damage to an organ
Malignant tumour
Can spread around the body Invades healthy tissues Cancer May split up releasing small clumps of cells into the blood stream or lymph stream Can lodge into another organ Secondary tumours Metastase- way they spread
Circulatory system
A system to transport substances around the body
Heart
Blood
Blood vessels
What is blood
A tissue consisting of a fluid called plasma in which WBC platelets and red blood cells are suspended
Blood clotting
A series of enzyme controlled reactions resulting in a change of fibrinogen to fibrin which forms a network of fibres trapping blood cells and forming a clot
Antigens
Proteins on the surface of cells
Agglutination
Blood cells sticking together
When blood from different groups is mixed
Cannot work and clogs capillaries
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid
