Impact On The Environment Flashcards
Waste may pollute
Water- sewage fertiliser or toxic chemicals
Air- smoke and gases (acid rain)
Land- herbicides and pesticides
Sewage and fertilisers can cause eutrophication
Waste production
Water- sewage
Land- chemicals/ fertilisers
Air- smoke/ gases
Sulfur dioxide can cause acid rain
Eutrophication
An increase in the conc of mineral ions in the water stimulates the growth of algae or plants
Results in some being unable to receive sufficient light for photosynthesis and these organisms die
Large increase in numbers of microorganisms that feed off dead organisms
Respiration depletes oxygen conc in water leading to death of aerobic organisms
Deforestation main problems
More methane
More CO2
Less CO2 taken in
Less biodiversity
Peat bogs
Are acidic and waterlogged
Partly rotted plants form peat
Co2 stored in peat
Peat decomposes real easing co2 when split up
Peat bogs drained for land used for farming
