Key Area 3.8 Flashcards
Describe habitat fragments
Their total surface area is smaller.
They have limited resources so cannot support as much life.
They also suffer from degradation at their edges further reducing their size
Why is the degradation of edges in a habitat fragment bad
When edges degrade, the edge species move closer into the centre
More completion between the edge species + middle species
Some die so there is a loss of genetic diversity
How can habitat fragmentation be counter acted
Using habitat corridors
What is the advantage of habits corridors
Links habitats together so:
Easier to find mate (increasing gene pool)
Easier to find food
How can habitat corridors be bad
Could allow the spread of diseases
Why may a species become invasive
Free from:
Predators
Parasites
Pathogens
Competition
Why are invasive species more successful compared to native species
Prey on native species or outcompete them
