Kap 8. Agression Flashcards
Aggression
The intentional infliction of some form of harm on others
(Baron & Byrne, 2000)
Susceptibility hypothesis
when features of someone´s enviroment make him/her more susceptible to particular kinds of behavior as a consequence
Frustration-agression theory
the theory that frustation trigger a readiness to aggress
Conlusions: Yes, frustration often increases the likelihood of showing aggression (prepare for aggression)
– But not always (see later slides on relevant factors)
Displacement
the redirection of aggression to a target other than the source of the frustration. Generally the new target is a safer or more socially acceptable target
Excitation-transfer model
when a state of physiological arousal is transferred from one situation to another, resulting in heightened expressive behavior
aggression displacement
Relative deprivation
the perception that one is less well off than others with whom one compares oneself
- A general state of being not able to pursue one’s goals
– Perception that it is unjustified
Egoistic relative deprivation
the sense of frustration an indivudual might feel when they feel deprived in comparision to others
Fraternal relative deprivation
the sense of frustration experienced by group members when they consider their group is being unfairly treated with respect to other groups
Reciprocity principle
asserts that we should treat like with like. So responses to a positive action should be positive, wheras those to a negative action should be negative
cultivation hypothesis
the belief that television consumption is associated with the belief it reflects the real-world
General Aggresion Model (GAM)
a model that represents an attempt to unify the various theories of aggression.
It tries to incorporate personal and situational explanations for aggresion, including personality, sex, attidues, frustation, pain, heat, alcohol and other drugs, agressive cues in the enviroment
5 consistent effects Anderson found on video games on aggression
- increased arousal
- increased aggressive thinking
- increased agressive feelings
- increased agressive behaviors
- decreased prosocial behaviors
Catharsis theory
emotional cleansing. In psychodynamic theory this is the process of expressing repressed emotions, so these no longer cause neurotic problems
“old and wrong theort”
reactive aggression
aggresjon i respons til provosering
instrumental aggression
aggresjon for å nå en belønning
