How can the edibility test be conducted?

A

The Edibility Test.

(a) Test 1- Smell.
Take a few leaves of the plant, a portion of the fruit and crush them in the hand. Smell them; any smelling of almonds peaches should be discarded.

(b) Test 2- Skin Irritation.
Rub lightly or squeeze some leafs of fruit onto the skin: on the underside of the arm between the armpit and the elbow. If there is any reddening of the skin, the item should be discarded.

(c) Test 3-Lips, Mouth and Tongue.
If tests 1 and 2 are completed successfully, carry out the following tests stopping as soon as there is any irritation.

(i) Lips Place a small portion between the lips and wait for a few seconds for any possible irritation
(ii) Mouth Take a pea- sized portion and place it in the corner of the mouth and wait for minutes.
(iii) Tongue Take another pea-sized portion and place it on the tip of the tongue, if after 20 seconds there is no irritation introduce the plant to the mouth and chew without swallowing. Wait for 20 minutes. Any irritation or soreness, definite bitter taste or disturbing reactions then discard the item.

(d) Test 4- Swallowing-
Eat a mouthful or if you cannot boil then a very small portion, chewing it fully and a very 4 hours, watch for the following symptoms.

(i) Sore hunting mouth, tongue or throat.
(ii) Belching .
(iii) Nausea or sickness.
(iv) Stomach pains of distressing symptoms.
(v) Any gripping pain in lower stomach abdomen.

(e) Test 5- Eating Large Amount:
If there is no reaction, taste eating 5-6 times and observe for the above-mentioned reaction. If no reactions, then the food is safe to eat.
