Q

What are the situation while the insurgents are moving to ambush site? What are the actions that should be taken during those situations?

A

There may be three situations for this.

(a) Sit-I. While the insurgents are moving to Ambush site.
(b) Sit-II. While countering the insurgents’ ambush.
(c) Sit-III. While Insurgents are withdrawing from the Ambush site after springing or without springing their ambush.

Situation-I. While the Insurgents are Moving to Ambush Site - There may be two situations

(a) Confirmed information of Insurgents movement to Ambush Site. To ensure success, following actions should be taken.
(i) Make a firm base in a dominating ground close to insurgent’s ambush site. Keep scouts in suitable places and stops in escape routes. Surprise should be maintained.
(ii) Secure the firm base and take all round defenses. Locate the possible insurgents killing ground and position of covering group, reserve group and stops.
(iii) Site the automatic weapons, mortars, grenades and personal weapons in suitable places to cover all the insurgents’ positions. Do not forget to cover the insurgents reserve position and withdrawing routes
(iv) Deploy the stop group, covering group and reserve groups as per ambush plan. Location of Ambush commander and 2IC are more important for command and control.
(v) Ambush site should be camouflaged, concealed, covered and field of fire must be clear. Occupation should be in complete silence.
(vi) When the insurgents gather in the ambush site, they seem to be uncontrolled and disorganized. In that condition, use your all weapons to make more casualties to the insurgent.
(vii) Captured should be controlled by reserve group. Stop group should pursuit the fleeing insurgent keeping in mind that pursuit should be controlled, well-coordinated and the limit of pursuit should be well defined in order to avoid blue and blue or leading to any kind of traps.
(b) Unconfirmed information (or in Suspicious Area) of Insurgents’ movement to Ambush Site.

SF should consider the following points including the basic considerations:

(i) Picketing should be deployed in the dominating ground close to the suspected area and lay automatic weapon and mortars covering the likely ambush sites.
(ii) Picketing area then converted to Firm base for the following actions.

   (aa) False Movement.
   (ab) Use of Recce Teams.
