Nos dijeron que no podíamos ir. For indirect style, verbs of communication do not use subjunctive even if there is a change of subject. That is the role. Exception is, if it is an order, then verbs of com use subjunctive. Me dijo que le pidiera un café.

Why do I always forget that “the net” is feminine?

If it is plural it is generally “the times” but if it is singular it is generally “the period”
Si es plural generalmente es “los tiempos” (the times) pero si es singular generalmente es “la época” (the period-epoch).
