Journaling 101- Catharsis Writing Flashcards
Writing in the heat of strong emotions (negative and positive) can be cathartic.
By tapping into this feeling, you can use catharsis writing to help you release these emotions.
Whether your emotions are hidden or boiling over the surface, catharsis writing can help you feel lighter and less weighed down.
Emotions have an impact not just on our thoughts but also on our actions.
Negativity weighs you down , but by releasing your anger you can process your emotions and lessen their effects on your life.
Alternatively, if your feeling immense joy it’s just as important to write down your thoughts and feelings and why you feel this way, allowing you to savour it longer.
When writing start wherever you want. You can write “I’m so angry” or “I’m ecstatic!”, both are great starting places.
Writing honestly will help ensure a cathartic release is possible, so don’t hold back. There’s no such thing as “too much” in your journal.
While you may not be filled with emotions right now, we’ll try to tap into cathartic writing so you can practice.
Think back…
Try to recall an event that filled you with joy. What happened?
Reflect on the event…
How did this emotion affect you?
Think of others…
Did you share this joy with others?
Now try to visualise yourself back at the event. Remember the feelings you had.
Take your time…
What would you write to thank others for your joy?
If you want to take it one step further, feel free to share your thank you with the person in your life.
While it may be tricky, cathartic writing will soon become an easier technique to use when processing strong emotions.
Use it whenever you feel your emotions brimming at the surface unable to be held down or even when you want to uncover deeper thoughts.
