Joints Flashcards
What are the three types of joints?
• fibrous joints
• cartilaginous joints
• synovial joints
What is a fibrous joint?
Joints held together by strong tough, fibrous tissue, making them almost immovable. E.g the skull.
What is a cartilaginous joint?
Connected by cartilage which allows for gentle movement. eg the spine
What are synovial joints?
Fluid filled joints that allows for a lot of movement. Eg hips, shoulders, knees
What are the six main ways the bones in joints interact?
• pivot joint - turn head and neck atlas + axis (cartilaginous joints
• hinge joint - elbows and knees (synovial joint)
• saddle joint - thumb
• plane joint - ankle
• condoloid joint - wrist
• ball and socket - hip and shoulder
What is the joint composition?
• joint capsule
• synovial membrane
•synovial fluid
• ligaments and tendons
• cartilage
What is the joint capsule?
Made up of strong flexible tissue that wraps around the joint keeping everything in place and stable.
What is the synovial membrane?
Smooth, shiny lining inside the joint capsule. Makes synovial fluid. Keeps everything moving with ease.
What is synovial fluid?
Slick protective cushion inside joints. Allows us to move without friction and grinding.
What are ligaments?
Powerful rubber bands that keep our bones connected and provide stability at our joints.
What are tendons?
Tough stretchy cords that attach muscles to bones. Making movement happen and keeping everything in sync.
What is Hyaline cartilage?
Smooth, shiny covering at the ends of bones, cushioning our joints making them super slippery.
