Biomechanics Flashcards
What happens in diaphragmatic breathing during the inhalation?
• the diaphragm contracts and draws downwards.
• the pelvic floor relaxes, lengthen and draws downwards.
• the intercostals pull the ribs up and out.
• the transverse abdominis relaxes and expands.
What happens in diaphragmatic breathing as you exhale?
• the diaphragm relaxes and draws upwards.
• the pelvic floor contract and lifts
• the intercostal muscles pull the rib cage down and in.
• the TA contracts providing support and stability.
What nerves system does diaphragmatic breathing work in?
The parasympathetic nervous system
What are the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing?
• reducing stress
• improving muscle function during exercise and preventing strain
• increasing how much oxygen is in your blood.
• making it easier for your body to release gas waste
• reducing bloody pressure
• reducing heat rate
What is the sagital plane?
• divides the body left to right
• any time we are in flexion or extension you’re moving in the sagital plane.
What is the frontal/coronal plane?
• divides the body front to back
• anytime we adduct or abduct the body,
Including flexion, we are working in the frontal plane.
What is the transverse plane?
• when we divide the upper and lower body’s
• any time we move in internal or external rotation.
What does Bilateral mean?
Both sides are moving to perform the motion.
What does unilateral mean?
One side moving to perform the the motion.
What does ipsilateral mean?
Movement on the same side. I.e two limbs moving on the same side of the body.
What does contralateral mean?
Movement on opposite sides. Two limbs moving but on opposite sides of the body.
What are closed chain movements?
A move when the hands and feet are fixed to the ground or an immovable surface. Great for building strength and stability in the muscles and joints. It also develops better body awareness and coordination.
What is open chain movement?
The moving part is away from the ground. The limbs are free to move and are working against resistance or gravity. Great for targeting specific muscle groups, building muscle strength and improving joint flexibility and range of motion.
