Joints Flashcards
What are the three types of joints
Fibrous, Cartilaginous and synovial
What are Fibrous joints?
The articulating bones are held very closely together by dense irregular connective tissue
Fibrous joints permit little or no movement
Example: Sutures between skull bones and articulations of the teeth in the jaw.
What are Cartilaginous joints?
joint is tightly connected by either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
Allow little/slight amounts of movement
Example: pubic symphysis, intervertebral discs, ribs to sternum
What are Fibrous joints?
A synovial cavity (containing synovial fluid) allows these joints to be freely movable. Types of synovial joint include Ball-and-socket, Hinge
What is an example of the ball and socket joint?
Shoulder, hips
What is an example of the hinge joint?
Knee or elbow
